Hey guys,
I'm working on GT6000 w/ Kohler 18hp opposed twin. Umpteen wiring issues from previous hands...if you know what I mean. I've got everything solved except for one issue; With the electric PTO switch (the metal toggle style switch, not the later plastic "pull-out" version) turned off, if I turn the ignition switch "on" (brand new ign. switch, brand new starter solenoid, brand new operator presence relay) I get a nice "clank" from the PTO clutch. The tractor can actually be started like this, which of course immediately fires up the blades.
I've got the owner's manual for the 917-255-960, which is basically the same model, but with the Briggs 18hp opposed, and it also uses the toggle style PTO switch, but is wired slightly different....according to the very nice wiring schematic on page 28. I could just replicate this style of wiring, but I'd prefer not to.
So does anyone have the original owner's manual for the 917-255980 that I'm working on? If so, can you scan, or take a photo of the wiring schematic and email to me? Or post here to help others?
BTW, if someone wants the schematic for the 917-255960, I'd be happy to share. I've also got it for the 917-250490.

Ha! I was just coming back to say I found it in pdf format at Searspartsdirect.com.
I saw the tab for the manual, but hadn't clicked on it, because I figured it was just to place an order for the book, or a copy of it.
D'oh.
Anyway, it's the same wiring diagram as what I show in my 917-255960 book, and doesn't show all the extra orange and red wires used between the PTO switch and the rider presence relay. Super.

I am a little confused, but I may be able to shed some light.
I have a 1993 GT6000, 917.255960. It has the Kohler M18, not Briggs 18hp. The owner's manual I have does not have a wiring diagram on page 28. However, the IPL, does have a diagram on page 54.
Like you, I couldn't find much on the 917.255980. However, I have a couple of questions relating to the red and orange wires you mentioned. Specifically where do they go? Does this tractor have the square idiot light module on the dash panel? Does your PTO toggle switch have 5 or 6 terminals on the back of it, and are they all wired? Does this tractor have the electric deck lift?
I ask, because I am rewiring my GT6000, adding the idiot light module. I am having to meld wiring harnesses from a 1992 Craftsman LT12 with a B&S 12hp, my GT6000, and a 1990 Craftsman III GT20 with a 20 hp Onan in order to get it to do exactly what I want.
All of the above may not help right now, but it might be able to get me to better understand what you are dealing with.

Well, I think I solved it. The red wires and orange wires at the PTO, in the 3 socket plug were installed in the plug wrong incorrect.
Here's how it was wired:

That's 12v coming in at the middle position, jumpering orange to that upper position to run the operator presence relay, and power going out to the PTO at the bottom.
